Prof. Dr. Kadir Gökdemir was born in 1955 in Yeşilkent, a neighborhood in the Sarız district of Kayseri. He took up wrestling at a young age and soon attracted attention with his talent, discipline, and determined character. During his active sporting career, Gökdemir represented Türkiye at the national team level and later carried the experience he gained throughout his wrestling career into the fields of coaching, sports administration, and academia.
As a former national wrestler, Kadir Gökdemir focused on the educational and scientific aspects of wrestling following the end of his active sporting career. He contributed to Turkish wrestling not only as an athlete but also as a coach and educator. Advocating that athletes’ technical, physical, and mental development should be supported through scientific methods, Gökdemir earned a respected place within the wrestling community through this approach.
Prof. Dr. Kadir Gökdemir continued his academic career at Gazi University’s School of Physical Education and Sports and Faculty of Sport Sciences, where he served as a faculty member for many years. He taught courses and conducted scientific research in the fields of wrestling, training science, athlete selection, and performance evaluation, while also educating numerous students. Through his academic work, he made significant contributions both to the field of sport sciences and to the development of wrestling education.
Gökdemir also guided postgraduate students in their academic development. His studies on the scientific foundations of wrestling training served as valuable resources for improving athletes’ performance and enhancing coaches’ professional knowledge. In this respect, he became one of the prominent figures who successfully combined practical wrestling experience with an academic perspective.
Prof. Dr. Kadir Gökdemir also contributed to the institutional development of Turkish wrestling by undertaking various responsibilities within the Turkish Wrestling Foundation. As a member of the foundation’s administration, he also served as head of delegation for the Greco-Roman Wrestling National Team at several international competitions. Through these responsibilities, he contributed to the representation of Turkish wrestling at both national and international levels.
Prof. Dr. Kadir Gökdemir passed away in Ankara on 21 June 2016. Having served Turkish wrestling for many years as a former national wrestler, academic, coach, and sports administrator, Gökdemir continues to be remembered with respect in Turkish sports history through the students he educated, his scientific work, and his lifelong commitment to wrestling.
