MUSTAFA DAĞISTANLI

Mustafa Dağıstanlı was born on 11 April 1931 in the village of Söğütpınar in the Çarşamba district of Samsun. From an early age, he developed an interest in wrestling, one of Türkiye’s traditional sports. Thanks to his physical strength, determined character, and technical abilities, he quickly attracted attention. Throughout his wrestling career, he became one of the most important figures in Turkish sports history, particularly through his achievements in freestyle wrestling.

Mustafa Dağıstanlı first wore the national jersey in 1953. He achieved his first major international success at the World Wrestling Championships held in Tokyo, Japan, in 1954. Competing in the 57-kilogram freestyle category, he became world champion and demonstrated that he was one of the strong representatives of Turkish wrestling on the international stage.

In 1955, Dağıstanlı won a gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Mediterranean Games, showing his ability in different wrestling styles. However, his greatest achievements came in freestyle wrestling. At the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, he competed in the 57-kilogram category and became Olympic champion, winning a gold medal for Türkiye.

In 1957, Dağıstanlı once again became world champion in the 62-kilogram category, and he repeated this success in 1959. Thus, he won three world championship titles during his career. Known for his strong defense, fast attacks, and distinctive techniques in freestyle wrestling, Dağıstanlı was regarded as one of the most successful wrestlers of his era.

Mustafa Dağıstanlı also represented Türkiye at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games. Competing in the 62-kilogram category, he became Olympic champion once again and won his second Olympic gold medal. With this achievement, he became one of the few Turkish athletes to win gold medals at two different Olympic Games.

During his active sporting career, Mustafa Dağıstanlı won 319 of the 320 matches he competed in within Türkiye and 70 of the 73 matches he wrestled internationally. His undefeated freestyle wrestling career led him to be known as “the wrestler whose back never touched the mat.” Through his achievements, he became one of the symbolic figures of Turkish wrestling.

After his wrestling career, Dağıstanlı worked as a coach for the Turkish national team and later entered politics. He served as a Member of Parliament for Samsun in the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye between 1973 and 1980.

Mustafa Dağıstanlı passed away in Ankara on 18 September 2022 at the age of 91. With two Olympic gold medals, three world championship titles, and his exemplary sporting character, Mustafa Dağıstanlı continues to be remembered as one of the unforgettable legends of Turkish wrestling.
